Detailed description of Shadow Ridge Public Golf Course

Shadow Ridge Golf Course is a Public 9 hole golf course located in Ionia, Michigan.

Shadow Ridge Golf Course is a Donald Ross design. The course first opened for play in 1917.

Par for the course is 35. From the back tees the course plays to 2,989 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 2,538 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 462 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 6, a par-3 that plays to 152 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 8, a 404 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 6, a 152 yard par-3.

With rolling fairways, undulating greens and beautiful mature landscaping, this nine hole course provides something for every golfer. Locals consider this course as the "poor man's Augusta." The mature trees lining the fairways provide a lot of character to the course. Numerous sand bunker have been positioned throughout the course, and the terrain is rolling. One small creek comes into play on hole #9, a 462-yard, par 5. There are additional sets of tees that can be used when playing a double loop eighteen hole round.

Made a 9:00am 1st tee time to play another 100+ year old nine (9) hole Donald Ross designed course and was surprised to find another nine (9) holes has been added. It seems that Rolling Hills Golf Estates built in 1976 (across the street) was purchased by Terry Herbruck (Shadow Ridge owner) in 2019 so he could have a full eighteen (18) hole facility to offer the Public. This is a great addition to Shadow Ridge with the conditions seamless but the 1917 Donald Ross as the Back 9 layout, is a great way to finish your round. The new 18 hole scorecard yardage from the Blue/Black is 2,850/3,001yds / 68.9 / 120 and Blue/Blue is 2,850/2,921yds / 68.5 / 119 with White/White at 2,677/2,404yds / 65.0 / 106 and Red/Red @ 2,305/1,981yds / 61.8 / 100 on this rolling hilly terrain for combined Par 35/35 layout. The Front 9 (East) is across the road, through the new tunnel which is a great safety addition in getting to the otherside. The #1 is a downhill 388yd dogleg right that is treelined and quite a intimidating Hpc 3 Par 4 from the tee box view. The #3 at 330yds is a dogleg right but you need to hug the LH side of the fairway because of RH trees blocking green if on right side of fairway. The #4 a sweeping right Par 5 at 440yds is short but its Hcp 1 is because of the narrow hilly fairway that limits carry when hitting into well placed hills. The #6 a Par 5 is the longest hole at 485yds and sweeping left means stay to righthand side to the uphill green. The #9 is a straightaway 333yd Par 4 but is into the wind with a hill 200yds out you need to carry, or its a blind shot to the downhill green. The Donald Ross Back 9 (West) #10 starts out with a Par 4 384yd blind tee shot to a downhill green location with bookend front sand traps. The uphill #11 Par 3 plays from 242yds down to 123yds and is a great culvert viewed fairway leading up to the green. The #12 Par 5 at 454yds is a downhill sweeping left with a huge tree at 280yds out, blocking corner to see the green. Tee shot must stay right if you want to advance ball inside 150yd marker on this Hcp 2 hole. The #14 follows #12 back uphill on this 367yd sweeping right with a LH tree blocking some of the green. The #15 downhill Par 3 at 160yds has a narrow slot through overhanging branches to a severe tipped forward green, stay below cup. The #17 Par 4 at 407yds has you teeing uphill from the Blacks needing 200yd carry to hit the fairway. Stay to the RH side of the fairway as there are two (2) hidden waste areas on the LH side of the fairway. The #18 is one long narrow uphill 458yd Par 5 with trees on the left and five (5) sand traps on the right side of fairway. This is a real gem of a hidden course you must play out here, and for $35 18/cart is a real deal with great conditions, tee to green. I ended up shooting 38/40 w/29putts in 2hrs/45minutes as the elevation changes affected by ball carry, but chip/putt was saving grace today. I played it from the tips today for a total of 5,851yds and it felt more like a 6,100yd layout with this hilly layout. Must play here if you're traveling through this area.

A Donald Ross design-------Loved the course. Very fun to play. Sloped fairways. fast greens. A challange but very fair. Small clubhouse. Friendly staff. Takr the time to check out the fairways before driving the ball----many of them slope right to left.
